Dr Peter Harper

Consultant Medical Oncologist


A globally acknowledged cancer consultant, and author of over 400 peer-reviewed publications.

Dr Peter Harper is an accredited physician and a medical oncologist, and one of the four founders of the London Oncology Clinic. His strength is targeting treatment to each patient’s specific needs, and he has dealt with most forms of cancer. He is particularly in demand from men seeking help with tumours of the prostate, kidney, testes and bladder.

Dr Harper is acknowledged globally for his work in developing new cancer drugs and treatments. He served on the Board of the French National Cancer Institute (INCA) and was awarded the title of Chevalier Legion D’Honneur in 2003 for his role in advising the French Government in the strategic changes made to their cancer care. In 2004, Dr Harper was awarded the prestigious Cine del Luca Medal in recognition of his work in the development of cancer treatments in lung cancer and gynaecological cancer.

He has previously served on the Board of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), the Board of ICACT and remains Secretary to ICACT. He is Chairman elect of the International Advisory Committee of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and has previously served on the Board of the International Gynecological Cancer Group (IGCS). He is an honorary member of cancer societies in Denmark, Malaysia and Thailand and is a founder and Previous board member of the Society International Oncologae Geriatrica (SIOG). He has recently represented the British Government at UK Health Meetings in Delhi and Shanghai (2015).

Dr Harper has been a member, executive member and chair of major UK medical committees, including numerous working parties at the UK Medical Research Council and trial committees at the UK Coordinating Committee of Cancer Research. He acts on advisory boards for new anticancer and vaccine therapy for seven industry leaders. Dr Harper is also a member of numerous professional bodies including the Royal Society of Medicine, British Association of Cancer Research and a founder member of both the London Lung Group and the London Gynaecology Oncology Group.

Dr Harper has published over 200 peer review papers, has presented over 300 papers in abstract and has contributed 14 chapters in text books His Cancer Research is now in association with the LOC partner organization Sarah Canon Research Institute (SCRI) HCA's clinical research institute, and he is Chairman of their Medical Advisory Committee. He sat on eight editorial boards, including the prestigious “American Journal of Cancer”, and currently “Targeted Oncology” and “The Oncologist”.

Professional background


Dr Harper trained at University College and University College Hospital. He was appointed Consultant Medical Oncologist to Guy’s Hospital in 1969 as a general physician and medical oncologist, one of the first such post in a NHS hospital. He was subsequently consultant Medical Oncologist at King’s and St Thomas’ Hospital NHS Trust, and at the time of his retirement from NHS work in 2005 was appointed Consultant Emeritus to the Hospitals.   

Services provided to HCA


Dr Harper provides medical advisory services to  HCA. In his role, he leads interactions with hospital medical staff and the hospital leadership team to assist the hospital by providing medical advice and promote high quality, cost effective care.

In his role, he contributes to the strategy, policies and decision making regarding oncology treatments and advises HCA to ensure that care provided within the facility is appropriate and efficient. In his role, Dr Harper advises on initiatives to drive clinical standards by providing professional advice on clinical governance matters and ensuring the adoption of those by colleagues in the oncology area.

In addition, he supports the HCA team to recruit and retain staff as well as taking a lead role in coaching and support doctors and medical staff credentialing. In his role, he will evaluate ongoing quality initiatives such as clinical audits and quality assurance programmes.

Dr Harper was the Chairman of Medical Advisory Committee at the London Bridge Hospital for 8 years and is now a member of HCA’s cross-site cancer committee. He led the integration of the Physican Clinic into HCA and the establishment of the XVIII Centre of Advanced Screening. Both these services have improved patient care quality at HCA by broadening the types of integrated support we can offer. He liaises with pharmaceutical boards which helps bring together cutting-edge research and treatments to our patients in partnership with the Sarah Cannon Research Centre.

HCA UK is charged by doctors in return for their expertise and advice, including on how to operate safe hospital facilities delivering complex care. All services provided under this agreement are charged to HCA UK. From April to December 2015, the total charge was £75,000.
