Professor Kefah Mokbel

Consultant Breast Surgeon

Professor Kefah Mokbel is one of the most respected breast surgeons in London, and a pioneer in the field of the molecular biology of breast cancer.

His clinical interests include the early detection of breast cancer; breast ductoscopy; minimally-invasive breast surgery; skin-sparing mastectomy: breast reconstruction; cosmetic breast surgery and the management of benign conditions.

His main research interest lies in the field of molecular biology and the clinical prevention and management of breast cancer. In November 2013, US website Expertscape ranked Professor Mokbel as the top breast expert in London. Professor Mokbel was also named in Tatler magazine's Best Doctors Guide as one of the featured 'Top Breast Surgeons' in 2006 and 2007 and in November 2010 he was named in the Times magazine's list of Britain's Top Doctors.

He is considered a key opinion leader in the field of breast cancer and breast surgery and has featured in leading national and international media including The Times, The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph, The Daily Mail, BBC, ITV, NBC and Sky News.

Professional background

Professor Mokbel graduated from the University of London in 1990, achieving the highest score in General Medicine at The London Hospital Medical College.  He qualified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1994, and was granted the Master of Surgery degree in 2000 by The Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine for his research into the molecular biology of breast cancer.

Professor Mokbel has published over 200 medical papers and written 14 books in disciplines including surgery, oncology, breast cancer and postgraduate medical education. He is the founding president of the charity Breast Cancer Hope and is a member of the editorial board of several international medical journals.

Services provided to HCA

Professor Mokbel provides medical advisory services for HCA's Princess Grace Hospital. In his role, Professor Mokbel leads interactions with hospital medical staff and the hospital leadership team to assist the hospital by providing medical advice and promote high quality, cost effective care.

In his role, he contributes to the strategy, policies and decision making regarding breast surgery treatments and advises HCA to ensure that care provided within the facility is appropriate and efficient. In his role, Professor Mokbel advises on initiatives to drive clinical standards by providing professional advice on clinical governance matters and ensuring the adoption of those by colleagues in the breast surgery area.

In addition, he works with medical insurance companies, GPs, other relevant local NHS contacts, and patients to educate and advise on relevant clinical updates to treatments in breast surgery available in the facility. Furthermore, he advises on the accuracy of literature that may be published regarding relevant services. He will also advise on how to make the patient referral smooth to reduce stress and anxiety for patients.

HCA UK is charged by doctors in return for their expertise and advice, including on how to operate safe hospital facilities delivering complex care.

All services provided under this agreement are charged to HCA UK. From January to December 2017, the total charge was £97,650.00
