Dr Michael Michell is a Consultant Radiologist at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and has been involved in the development of the Quality Assurance Programme for the National Breast Screening Programme. He has served as Chairman of the National Breast Screening Radiology Quality Assurance Committee, Lead Radiologist for Screening Quality Assurance for London Region and as radiology representative on the Department of Health Advisory Committee for Breast Cancer Screening. Dr Michell has written scientific articles and chapters in textbooks, has lectured extensively in North America, Europe, the Far East and Australia and is an acknowledged expert on all aspects of screening and diagnosis of breast disease.
Dr Michell qualified in medicine from Cambridge University and was appointed Consultant Radiologist at Kings College Hospital, London in 1986. He was Clinical Director of the Breast Screening Programme at Kings College Hospital and National Training Centre from 1998 – 2014 - the Screening Service provides routine mammography examinations for 40,000 women resident in South East London per annum and the National Training Centre provides specialist training in all aspects of breast radiology for radiologists, radiographers and other professionals involved in the service. Dr Michell has been active in research and evaluation of new technology in breast radiology including image guided biopsy techniques, and he is the Chief Investigator for PROSPECTS, the National Multicentre Trial of tomosynthesis in routine screening.
Services provided to HCA
Dr Michell provides medical advisory services for HCA’s The Princess Grace Hospital in relation to breast screening and diagnostic services, in line with current practice and undertakes the role of lead breast radiologist.
In his role he is responsible for protocols, including MDT terms of reference, as agreed and implemented in accordance with national guidelines including British Society of Breast Radiology (formerly RCR Breast Group), NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence), and for monitoring and reporting compliance. Dr Michell provides support and guidance for the multidisciplinary programme management, provides assistance in the administration and support of the MDT in conjunction with HCA Staff including documenting decisions about diagnosis and referral for treatment and outcomes and ensuring the information is available within the HCA medical record.
In addition he also assists in the development of quality assurance processes, standards and outcome measures for HCA including quality and effectiveness of breast screening and diagnostic services, management of clinical issues identified through quality assurance processes and research opportunities.
Dr Michell is an active member of the HCA Breast Board, the HCA Imaging Board, lead for Breast Radiology & contributes to the production of the annual breast data report.
