Dr Andy Petros

Consultant Paediatric Intensivist

A specialist in paediatric intensive care and transportation.
Dr Andy Petros was the Director of the Children’s Acute Transport Service (CATS) for 11 years and Specialty Unit lead for the Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Units at Great Ormond Street Hospital for 5 years. He is also the Clinical Director of the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at The Portland Hospital.

At CATS, Dr Petros supervised, organised, and coordinated a group of over 40 consultants and nurses from across north London. The service he developed and led transfers more than 1,200 sick babies and children each year to intensive care units. It has been awarded a ‘Health Oscar' for Emergency Care by the Department of Health.

Dr Petros’ expertise includes caring for children in urgent need of all forms of continuing critical care. They are suffering from every manner of serious illness and injury, including road accidents, blood pressure problems and difficulties with breathing.

In his role as Clinical Director of the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at The Portland Hospital, Dr Petros also leads a specialist team of consultant paediatric intensivists. They are fully equipped to treat many complex and specialist areas. Dr Petros’ particular expertise is in the care of children undergoing major surgery and that of children who are acutely or chronically unwell. The Portland PICU offers spinal surgery, neurology, urology, gastroenterology, orthopaedics and treatments to the ear, nose and throat.

Professional background

Dr Petros qualified in Medicine at the University of London and completed advanced studies at Oxford. He has been on the Specialist Register in Anaesthetics since 1996

Services provided to HCA

Dr Petros provides medical advisory services for HCA's Portland Hospital. In his role, Dr Petros leads interactions with hospital medical staff and the hospital leadership team to assist the hospital by providing medical advice and promote high quality, cost effective care.

In his role, he contributes to the strategy, policies and decision-making regarding intensive care and advises HCA to ensure that care provided within the facility is appropriate and efficient. In his role, Dr Petros advises on initiatives to drive clinical standards by providing professional advice on clinical governance matters and ensuring the adoption of those by colleagues.

In addition, he works with medical insurance companies, GPs, other relevant local NHS contacts and parents to educate and advise on relevant clinical updates to treatments in available in the facility. Furthermore, he advises on the accuracy of literature that may be published regarding relevant services. He will also advise on how to make the patient referral smooth to reduce stress and anxiety for patients.

HCA UK is charged by doctors in return for their expertise and advice, including on how to operate safe hospital facilities delivering complex care.

All services provided under this agreement are charged to HCA UK. From April to December 2017, the total charge was £55,315.

HCA requires the doctors that advise us to attest that if they also practice in the NHS that they are not compromising their NHS commitments.
