Professor John Harper

Consultant Dermatologist

An internationally respected pioneer in children’s dermatology.

Professor John Harper is Professor of Paediatric Dermatology at the Institute of Child Health University College London, and Honorary Consultant at Great Ormond Street Hospital. He specialises in skin disorders affecting children, such as severe eczema, psoriasis, neuro-cutaneous syndromes, birthmarks and neonatal skin disorders.

Harper’s Textbook of Pediatric Dermatology is internationally recognised as the field’s standard text. Professor Harper has published over 150 papers.

In 2011, he received the Certificate of Appreciation by the International League of Dermatological Societies, affiliated with the World Health Organisation, for his significant contribution to dermatology.

Professional background

Professor Harper trained at St Mary’s Hospital, University of London and completed his postgraduate MD thesis on skin manifestations of graft versus host disease in children receiving a bone marrow transplant at Westminster Children’s Hospital in London.

He was the founding Secretary of the British Society for Paediatric Dermatology in 1988 and was President of the European Society of Paediatric Dermatology from 1993 to 1996. He joined Great Ormond Street Hospital in 1986, becoming Professor in 2001.

As well as his clinical contributions, Professor Harper has established an active research team at the Institute of Child Health, which focuses on skin biology in children.

Services provided to HCA

Professor Harper provides medical advisory services for HCA's The Portland Hospital. In his role, Professor Harper leads interactions with hospital medical staff and the hospital leadership team to assist the hospital by providing medical advice and promote high quality, cost effective care.

In his role, he contributes to the strategy, policies and decision making regarding skin treatments and advises HCA to ensure that care provided within the facility is appropriate and efficient. In his role, Professor Harper advises on initiatives to drive clinical standards by providing professional advice on clinical governance matters and ensuring the adoption of those by colleagues in the field of paediatric dermatology.

In addition, he works with medical insurance companies, GPs, other relevant local NHS contacts, and patients to educate and advise on relevant clinical updates to treatments in dermatology available in the facility. Furthermore, he advises on the accuracy of literature that may be published regarding relevant services. He will also advise on how to make the patient referral smooth to reduce stress and anxiety for patients.

Prof Harper is lead clinician for paediatric dermatology at the Portland Hospital and provides a birthmark screening service for newborn babies at the Hospital. He has established a skin laser service for children with vascular birthmarks and the treatment of infantile haemangiomas with propranolol.

HCA UK is charged by doctors in return for their expertise and advice, including on how to operate safe hospital facilities delivering complex care. Between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2018, HCA made payments to this doctor totalling £10,800.00 in respect of medical advisory services provided under agreement with HCA.
