The paediatric gastroenterology unit provides consultations and treatments for children with a wide range of diseases of the digestive system.

The centre specialises in all gastroenterological disorders, including gastro-oesophageal reflux, infantile colic, child constipation and IBS. Treatments offered include upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, Ileo-colonoscopy, abdominal ultrasound, and CT and MRI scans to look at the bowel, liver and pancreas.

The team also specialises in feeding problems including nutritional concerns, swallowing difficulties, food allergies and lactose intolerance. The centre offers a multidisciplinary feeding clinic for children of all ages who experience these difficulties.

The practice is led by Dr Muffah Eltumi and Dr Michael Thomson. They are globally respected leaders in the field, pioneering the use of minimally invasive endoscopic treatments for reflux in childhood.

Between them, these consultants have contributed to hundreds of articles and chapters in international journals. These include Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology and the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition.

They also have an unrivalled reputation for teaching in paediatric gastroenterology, running the only hands-on training courses in paediatric endoscopy in the world.

The textbook Concise Paediatrics, written by Dr Thomson for The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, is the international standard text for the study of the field.  Dr Thomson has also authored and co-authored nearly 150 academic papers and has been invited to speak or present at nearly 500 times at academic conferences.

Services provided to HCA

This group of doctors provide medical advisory services HCA's The Portland Hospital in particular in gastroenterology. In their role, they lead interactions with hospital medical staff and the hospital leadership team to assist the hospital by providing medical advice and promote high quality, cost effective care.

In their role, they contribute to the strategy, policies and decision making regarding gastroenterology and advise HCA to ensure that care provided within the facility is appropriate and efficient. In their role, they advise on initiatives to drive clinical standards by providing professional advice on clinical governance matters and ensuring the adoption of those by colleagues in the gastroenterology area.

In addition, they work with medical insurance companies, GPs, other relevant local NHS contacts, and patients to educate and advise on relevant clinical updates to treatments in gastroenterology available in the facility. Furthermore, they advise on the accuracy of literature that may be published regarding relevant services. They will also advise on how to make the patient referral smooth to reduce stress and anxiety for patients.

All services provided under this agreement are charged to HCA UK. Between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2018, HCA made payments to this doctor totalling 833 in respect of medical advisory services provided under agreement with HCA.
